Other Than Love
We sat on a bench
to wait for the bus;
our shoulders were touching,
our bodies were tired,
our day was ending.
You did an impression
of a person I didn’t know,
still, I laughed and laughed,
so you did some more.
The night fell slowly;
the stars came out.
We kept sitting there,
watching the buses come and go,
extending the moment
as long as we could.
We got on a bus at last,
in our mouths the sour taste
of knowing we’d part soon.
We held the bars,
stood next to each other.
I gazed through the window,
the memory of your shoulder
lingering on mine.
The driver hit the brakes,
we staggered.
Still, my melancholy
wasn’t shaken.
I felt someone gently
taking my arm.
Surprised, I turned
only to face you.
You flashed a smile,
your eyes caressed mine,
I smiled back
like you saved my life.
A secret moment,
an understanding,
a river flew both ways.
So simple,
so obvious,
so delightful,
so happy and broken
at the same time.
And even though
you denied it later,
what else could it be
other than love?

Conversation with the Magic 8-Ball

- Magic 8-Ball, should I contact him?
- My sources say no.
- Will he contact me?
- Outlook good.
- Should we get together again?
- Very doubtful.
- Can we still be friends?
- Signs point to yes.
- Does he want me in his life?
- Most likely.
- Does he miss me?
- It is decidedly so.
- Is he thinking about me right now?
- Signs point to yes.
- Does he still love me?
- Signs point to yes.
- Should I forgive him?
- Very doubtful.
- Did he really lie to me?
- Outlook good.
- Did he ever cheat on me?
- Signs point to yes.
- Does he like to hurt me?
- It is decidedly so.
- Does he hate me?
- Very doubtful.
- Do I love him?
- Signs point to yes.
- Am I an idiot to want him still?
- It is decidedly so.
- Will I get hurt again?
- It is certain.
- Will he make me cry again?
- You may rely on it.
- What should I do?
- Ask again later.
